Guest Blog: Browsers, Advertising and Privacy

Cyber security is a vital part of your business. Ensuring your company and client’s data is secure is not only important, but also a legal obligation.

When browsing the internet, how many popup ads do you have to close or click away from? Some of those ads may contain malware or a virus which could compromise your data.

A few words from our resident Cyber Security expert, Peter Elliot.

Most of us are unaware that your web browser is probably the most complex application running on your phone or PC. The big Four in this space are Google’s Chrome, Microsoft’s Edge, Mozilla’s Firefox and Apple’s Safari. Mozilla is open-source and independent of any of the big tech companies. In a way they are all big guardians of your privacy. They variously limit the operation of those pesky cookies that collect your online personal data and browsing preferences on behalf of advertisers. If I was to rank them for how well they protect your privacy it would be Firefox, Safari, then Chrome and Edge. Chrome and Edge are similar in that they both use the underlying ‘Chromium’ engine.

I am amazed more of us don’t use the free Ad-Blocker extensions available for all browsers – just Google ‘ad blocker’ and make your choice. They ensure all those ‘targeted’ pop-up ads will stop appearing. And there is a security benefit too because of the growth of ‘Mal-vertising’ where clicking on a compromised advert can download malware onto your device.

So stay safe and private, always use complex and unique passwords, 2FA where it is available and if you haven’t yet done so download that ad-blocker for a cleaner and more private browsing experience.
