The Covid-19 crisis has tested business cyber security to the limit, with the unprecedented switch to working from home and digital commerce being matched by an equally huge uplift in cyber-crime, from phishing attacks to malware issues.
As remote working has become the “new normal”, so too has the use of insecure devices and networks outside of the usual protection of the physical office environment, laying businesses open to attack from those intent on stealing their credentials and defrauding them.
On top of that, there are all the less sinister but equally damaging issues of data loss incurred by hardware failure and accidental deletion.
In the past 12 months:
- 96% of UK businesses have suffered a damaging cyber attack
- 80% of law firms have reported phishing attempts
- 76% of local councils have experienced cyber attacks and data breaches
- 51% of organisations have been affected by ransomware
- 1 in 3 laptops have been lost or stolen
- 3 million hard drives have failed
And, by 2020, it’s estimated that 70% of businesses will have suffered disruption caused by unrecoverable data loss in a cloud-based application.
